Marana at a Glance

Location

Marana lies along Interstate 10 northwest of Tucson, about 30 minutes from Tucson International Airport and 90 minutes south of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Its location makes it a convenient base for exploring the Sonoran Desert and the greater Tucson region.

The landscape

Marana stretches from the Tortolita Mountains in the east to Ironwood Forest National Monument in the west. The community offers access to mountain trails, desert preserves, riparian habitat, and the west side of Saguaro National Park.

History and culture

People have farmed the Santa Cruz River Valley for more than 4,000 years. Evidence of ancient villages, irrigation systems, agricultural traditions and petroglyphs remains throughout the region. Marana’s more recent history includes ranching, railroads, aviation and decades of Western filmmaking.

Outdoor recreation

Hiking, mountain biking, cycling, birding and golf are all part of the Marana experience. We even have our own lake where more than 270 bird species have been spotted!

Places to stay

Marana’s lodging ranges from convenient hotels near Interstate 10 to guest-ranch experiences and desert luxury.

The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain and its spa each received a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star award for 2026 and has been awarded two Michelin Keys. The resort sits against the Tortolita Mountains, with golf, trails, dining, and desert experiences nearby.

Tourism in Marana

Travel and tourism generated an estimated $318.2 million in economic impact for Marana in 2023. The Town’s Tourism Master Plan, approved in 2025, connects destination development with local quality of life, environmental stewardship and long-term community priorities.

Let the desert set the pace

Following Marana’s ancient landscape. The Tortolita Mountains hold more than sweeping views. Petroglyphs, archaeological sites and remnants of ancient agave cultivation reveal how people have lived with—and learned from—this landscape for thousands of years.Potential angles: archaeology, Indigenous history, responsible recreation, agave cultivation, desert adaptation and cultural landscapes.

Ironwood Forest National Monument: An untouched recreational oasis. An Arizona cycling base hiding in plain sight. Marana connects road cycling, mountain biking and more than 100 miles of shared-use paths through The Chuck Huckelberry Loop. Events bring competitive cyclists to the community, while year-round routes make it approachable for recreational riders.

Stories rooted in place

Four thousand years of farming in the desert. Long before Marana became a modern town, farmers used the Santa Cruz River and sophisticated irrigation systems to grow food in the desert. A different side of Arizona luxury. At The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain, luxury is shaped by its setting: desert-inspired treatments, mountain trails, dark skies and quiet spaces built into the Tortolita landscape.
